Resource Consents

Resource Consent is required to undertake works to trees protected by District Plans or conditions, and we can help you with this process to ensure it runs as smoothly as possible. We supply the expert report Council needs to assess the application. We have good relationships with staff at many Councils which helps to ensure there are no hiccups or surprises.

RESOURCE CONSENT APPLICATIONS

We prepare resource consent applications for development which involves working close to protected trees. This may require tree protection or special engineering solutions to allow development close to trees. We liaise with councils and tree owners so the application moves seamlessly and quickly to a successful outcome. We prepare GIS maps showing tree positions and locations of protective fencing and special engineering solutions.

CONSENT CONDITIONS AND MONITORING

Notable Trees and other protected trees may be subject to resource consent conditions, which means that they need to be monitored during maintenance or if development is taking place nearby. Protecting tree root systems is vital for tree health and prosperity. We can monitor construction programmes to make sure trees are adequately protected.

Safety and condition REPORTS

We can prepare a range of specialist arborist reports to support large development resource consent applications: Tree Impact Assessments, Tree Protection Methodologies, Tree Surveys, Transplant Feasibility Reports, Tree Valuation$ Reports, Expert Witness reports, and Tree Safety Reports. Notable Trees should be retained and protected when safe but no tree lives forever and sometimes unsafe trees need to be removed for safety.

DISTRICT PLAN TREE CHAPTER REVIEWS

We work with councils and tree owners to make sure existing trees are accurately assessed, and GPS plotted on district plan maps. We’ll also assess trees that have been nominated to be included in a notable or heritage tree registry, advising councils on which trees should be protected and why. We provide advice on district plan tree-related policy and tree protection rules, helping you with all parts of the process from draft stages to public hearings and appeals.

HERITAGE AND NOTABLE TREEs

Using amenity valuation methods like STEM we can determine whether trees should be listed as a Notable tree in a district plan.  We determine trees’ amenity value, and advise Councils on which trees should be protected and why. We can also act on behalf of clients to appeal council decisions and processes regarding tree protection, particularly where an adequate tree assessment may not have taken place.
