Forest house, kapiti coast

The task of acquiring consent for a modern, sleek home in a protected forest with a minimal footprint and only minor impacts on the native bush and ecology requires expert arboricultural assistance. For this project we worked with architects and planners to navigate the planning process and providing advice on low impact engineering solutions to prevent tree and root damage. Resource Consent has now been granted for this wonderful forest house.

protection of puriri tree - Waitohi Library Redevelopment

Client: Wellington City Council

We were engaged by Wellington City Council to ensure protection and retention of a beautiful native Puriri Tree on the library development site. A new footpath was being placed very close to this wonderful tree. We undertook remediation including advice on path design and construction methods, and undertook some careful root pruning. We followed up with soil aeration and nutrient feeding to boost root health. The tree is now thriving in its new surroundings.

Expert Witness - district plan tree chapter review

client: Greytown Tree Advisory Group

Jez Partridge provided Expert Witness evidence as part of the South Wairarapa Council Tree Chapter update (part of a plan change). The Council had proposed changing the method it used to assess trees which was poorly formulated and would have caused perverse outcomes. Jez presented his evidence at the Plan Change Hearing, and as a result the Commissioner recommended that Council’s proposed tree assessment method be changed. The changes were adopted by Council. See Jez’s Expert Witness Report for more detail.

Tree Assessments - Palmerston North central Square

client: Palmerston North City Council

Treecology worked with Palmerston North City Council and Isthmus to assess trees in relation to proposed changes to hard landscaping and roads. We undertook detailed assessments of existing trees with particular attention to root system impacts and suitable mitigation. We then provided advice on new tree establishment including the suitability of particular trees and how to establish these. Palmerston North Square contains many wonderful and attractive mature and developing trees.

Erskine College redevelopment -protection of retained trees

Client: egmont dixon

Wellington City Council issued a Resource Consent for the development which included a requirement to preserve a group of mature pohutukawa trees.

Treecology was engaged by Egmont Dixon to ensure that impacts to trees and tree roots were reduced and mitigated as required by the Wellington City Council Resource Consent.

A variety of protection measures were utilised to protect trees including ‘no dig’ paths over tree roots and threading services below tree roots. Trees were carefully protected and all protection measures were signed off as completed successfully by Council.

Tree surveys and retention plans - The Orchards Retirement Village in Greytown

Client: The Orchards Greytown

We worked with Perception Planning and The Orchards Greytown on a project that will transform a large working orchard into a retirement village. We surveyed and assessed the most important trees and shelter belts and provided advice on tree removal and retention. Many existing landscape and orchard trees have been integrated and retained as part of the development. On this project we also worked with Local Collective Landscape Architecture of Wellington.

tree Safety near camping areas

Client: Department of Conservation

The Department of Conservation asked us to do safety assessments for trees in a native beech forest close to campsites. We made recommendations for safety works to trees close to camping areas, and suggested creative approaches to avoid the need for tree removal. By modifying existing camping areas close to unsafe trees, therefore making them unattractive to campers, and modifying safer areas to make them more attractive for camping, excessive tree works could be avoided.

Tree Risk Assessments for a Masterton campus redevelopment

Client: Taratahi Agricultural College

The college was being renovated to accommodate new courses and a large codominant stem snapped out of an Australian Blackwood tree. As a result of this Treecology was asked to undertake tree risk assessments of the major large trees on the site. We undertook formal ISA Tree Risk Assessments of all these trees to ensure safety for all persons using the grounds. The assessments identified several limbs and branches which required corrective tree surgery or reduction, and unfortunately the Blackwood tree needed to be removed as it was no longer safe to retain.

tree assessment and protection

CLIENT : KAINGA ORA

Treecology was engaged by Kainga Ora to assess the condition of trees to ensure that the better condition trees could be integrated into the new housing development in Lower Hutt. Working with the developer and Landscape Architects we agreed on trees to protect and retain.
